Nottingham = Happening
From Instagram legends “nottshappening” to a growing media industry, new facilities and famous faces – let’s dive into why I believe Nottingham is an awesome place for local businesses who who market and communicate through social.
1. Local Fame & Promotion
Brands can reach thousands through Notts based pages/accounts that are happy to post business. “Nottshappening” is the perfect example: They boast thousands of followers and exist to promote new events, news and announce new businesses too. If you are opening a cool new restaurant in the Lace Market, you can guarantee publicity from lots of local influencers like them that love Notts and the great food spots within it. Tell people and they will share!
Alongside this, we’re known for how active our local celebrities are. YouTube, TikTok and Facebook famous influencers like “Ladbaby” are always collaborating with businesses in Nottingham. Nottingham’s TV Workshop produces some of the countries greatest young actors, and those that star in films still end up back in Nottingham helping our city! For example, famous actress and “This is England” star Vicky McClure runs Nottingham Forest’s Dementia Choir. Nottingham Forest alone has helped the city with their online presence.. That promotion season was absolutely massive for our city and Nottingham’s sport industry. We’re called “The Famous Team” for a reason.
Did you know that two of YouTube’s UK titans, Tom Scott and Mrwhostheboss are both from Nottinghamshire?
2. Education & Student Culture
Two universities (NTU & UON) constantly boost the local economy and aid any brand that appeals to younger generations. Creative happenings, community arts spaces and venues are popular amongst young people and our universities help these local ventures thrive. Nottingham Contemporary often host arts events for locals and I have seen many art films and video projects on their big screen. Nottingham Arts Theatre and Broadway also host local short film festivals and are great places to connect with filmmakers and videographers.
Honorable mention: Confetti College helps young people transition from GCSE to experienced filmmakers, animators and even sound designers with media diplomas. Years ago, I attended instead of doing A levels. I’m now a professional videographer!
3. Videographers > Agencies
In a UK media market full of expensive marketing agencies, advertising firms and studio spaces, Nottingham’s passionate and affordable creative culture shines through. Freelancers can range from music-video directing videographers to Premier League photographers, graffiti artists, interior designers and everything creative and/or digital! I guess I am one myself! This is thanks to a ‘free spirited’ creative arts scene, local businesses that take advantage of the arts as a promotional outlet and the local stars that influence our feeds.
